Jan 27, 2015 I'd say 5e is on the 'heavier' side of medium-complexity. It's not the complex beasts that 3e/4e/late 2e were, there's games that.LAP. D&D for complexity (Rolemaster!), but 5e is going simpler, and a lot of what appears in the DMG/PHB/MM is options, not essentials (hence, the Basic game!), but it's still got a lot of moving parts. A game like FATE or Dungeon World indeed strips out a lot of. One of the surprises for me moving to 5e (after not playing since the old AD&D days) was that the DMG was more of an addon now. In the old days it had the core rules and tables and was 100% necessary, while the players handbook just had character making info. But now the rules themselves seem to be in the PHB and the DMG is just good bonus info. Any plans to add the 5e D&D Core: PHB, DMG and MM to your digital products? This has been done elsewhere. I would love to see it happen at Roll20. I prefer the drawing and mapping tools here. I made the purchase in the other VTT for the Wotc core. However, the other VTT lacks mapping tools of any real sort. Not even close. So here I am.

What's More Important 5e Dmg Phb Mm 4
Has 5e (D&D Next? D&D Beyond? What's the accepted nomenclature here?) really been around for 4 years? I suppose I am greatly behind the times.
I grew up playing AD&D, though we also had the Basic and Expert sets and that one book with the blue-and-white cover and the chits in the back, and sometimes mixed them in the lower levels. I played with my older brother and his friends, and by the time 2nd edition AD&D came around they were off in college and I was playing with my classmates. I was so excited for 2nd edition! I really swallowed all the ad copy and thought the changes would remove all the little annoyances that I had with the game. They didn't, really. When 3e came out many years later, same thing. Now this was the game I always wanted D&D to be! But after 10+ years of playing it with people who mostly had poor mastery of the rules, I came to really dislike it. When 4e came out, well, same thing. It was the answer to all the headaches! Of course, it wasn't. My old high school group would have loved the tactical combat, though.
I participated heavily in the online flamewars around 3e and 4e's releases, and when 5e was gearing up, I removed myself from all online D&D discussion. I was not going to get sucked into pointless arguments or suckered into believing that this edition would satisfy me. And anyway, I was running an interminable Pathfinder campaign (not my favorite flavor of D&D). Why waste money on a game I'm not going to play?
But that campaign is coming to a close, and I was seduced by the gorgeous retailer-only cover of the new Eberron book (my favorite setting). That led to asking for the 5e PHB for xmas, and receiving it. And.. I really liked what I was reading! Last week I bought the MM, and then asked a friend to borrow the DMG. Now I'm dreaming up 5e Eberron adventures in my head. I know 5e is not perfect - the saving throw gap in particular concerns me, and sure some things are unbalanced - but it has a lot more 4e in it than I thought it would (a plus in my book). Seemingly without a lot of the bad parts of 4e. And it scales casters way back, shockingly so to my eyes, while also giving prepared casters more flexibility. And feats look much more manageable, and have to compete with attribute bumps. And magic items are cool again, instead of part of your budget. And, and and..
But maybe I'm just hyping myself up again? After all, I haven't seen it in play. But apparently people love it, the game's experiencing a resurgence, new people are playing, etc. Or so I hear, anyway. What do you all think? Is this the best iteration of D&D yet, or am I hoping for too much?
Edit to add: I'm also staying away from too much additional stuff. Just confining myself to the PHB, the Eberron book, and maybe Xanthar's on a case-by-case basis as some of that material is referenced by RFTLW. After 2e, 3e, PF, and 4e, I know all about how splats tend towards power creep and can add too many options for some players to handle.

Hello everyone,
our group is about to begin with an ongoing campaign within the D&D5E ruleset.
I'm using the ultimate license as the GM and the other's are using the demo version of FG. In order to fill out the modules and the corresping information within FG we're currently checking if we need any additional modules from the FG shop.
At this time I'm a bit confused which content is included within the Ultimate license (Ruleset) and the offered shop modules like the Dungeon Master's Guide, Player's Handbook and etc.
Where are the differences within the (basic Ruleset from Ultimate license) and those modules?
I would like to know beforehand if it's mostly rendundant or not.
